Surface and volume photoeffect from metal nanoparticles with electron mass discontinuity

چکیده

Quantum efficiencies of surface (SPE) and volume (VPE) photo-emissions from metal nanoparticles are calculated by quantum mechanical perturbation theory compared with each other. Along discontinuities in the potential barrier dielectric function, discontinuity electron effective mass on metal-environment interface is taken into account. General formulas for SPE VPE derived. An example spherical gold particles rectangular considered, analytical red border photoemission It found that efficiency less decreased reduction than VPE, so more efficient small large mass. Nanoparticle size, when to be tens nm or less.

Internal photoemission from plasmonic nanoparticles: comparison between surface and volume photoelectric effects.

We study the emission of photoelectrons from plasmonic nanoparticles into a surrounding matrix. We consider two mechanisms of electron emission from the nanoparticles--surface and volume ones--and use models for these two mechanisms which allow us to obtain analytical results for the photoelectron emission rate from a nanoparticle. Calculations have been carried out for a step potential at the ...

High-resolution electron microscopy studies of metal nanoparticles: shape and twin defects, and surface stress effects

Potential applications of metal nanoparticles, because of specific physical or chemical properties, are in close relationship to their structural peculiarities. Structural characterisation of nanoparticles in various configurations, using high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), may reveal detailed information on particle shape and planar lattice defects. The variations observed for most nob...

Magneto-controlled Quantized Electron Transfer to Surface-confined Redox Units and Metal Nanoparticles

Hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of undecanoate-capped magnetite (Fe3O4, average diameter ca. 5 nm) are used to control quantized electron transfer to surface-confined redox units and metal NPs. A two-phase system consisting of an aqueous electrolyte solution and a toluene phase that includes the suspended undecanoatecapped magnetic NPs is used to control the interfacial prop...

Dense electron system from gate-controlled surface metal-insulator transition.

Two-dimensional electron systems offer enormous opportunities for science discoveries and technological innovations. Here we report a dense electron system on the surface of single-crystal vanadium dioxide nanobeam via electrolyte gating. The overall conductance of the nanobeam increases by nearly 100 times at a gate voltage of 3 V. A series of experiments were carried out which rule out electr...

High-performance heterogeneous catalysis with surface-exposed stable metal nanoparticles

Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here,...
